Local Architecture

A colony of Bald-face hornets have been very busy getting ready for winter.  This nest is about 8 feet up on the eave of my front porch. How I missed it until now is something of a mystery. Hornets are generally territorial and in the past these guys have made a nuisance of themselves as soon as they are in the area.

A much less hazardous building is the old cabin on the hill above my house. This cabin was built before 1900 of tamarack logs. Every time I walk by I'm struck by how tight the corner still are. After a hundred years the roof is gone but the notching of the corners haven't moved.
